Mission & History

Designated as a LaSTEM Regional STEM Network Center by the Louisiana Board of Regents in 2020, the Capital Area STEM Network Center re-imagines how business and community partners can work together to provide quality STEM education throughout a youth's lifetime in the Region 2 area and far beyond.  Capital Area STEM is hosted by the LSU Cain Center for STEM Literacy.  To learn more about the LaSTEM initiative, click here.

To achieve its vision, the Center will serve as a resource to engage students, families, educators and the entire community in STEM education, from early childhood to employment. Specific focus areas include:

  • Increasing access to a wide range of STEM learning experiences in ways that enhance student participation and achievement in STEM, particularly for underrepresented in STEM
  • Using a systemic approach to integrating STEM into schools and districts as well as out-of-school-time settings
  • Strengthening opportunities and support for educators
  • Creating opportunities for business, industry, and community partners to engage in PK-16 career-building programming
  • Promoting broad family and community support for STEM education

To support the National Science and Technology Council’s Strategic Plan for STEM Education, the Capital Area STEM Network Center is committed to building strong foundations for STEM literacy, interest and achievement; increasing diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM; better preparing a STEM workforce for Louisiana; and measuring outcomes.  Capital Area STEM is a member of the national STEM Ecosystems Community of Practice.

*Louisiana Workforce Region 2 includes the following parishes:  Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana.
