This summer, 28 high school students from across the Capital Region explored the world of nursing through the Future Nurses Program at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University (FranU), hosted in partnership with Louisiana HOSA. Designed for students who are curious about nursing and healthcare careers, the intensive four-day program offers an inside look at what steps an individual needs to take to become a nurse. Participants explored essential nursing skills while gaining a deeper understanding of patient care, professional expectations, and the various pathways available within the nursing profession.
Throughout the week, students practiced foundational clinical skills including wound care, infection prevention and control, hygiene, therapeutic communication, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). They also learned how nurses perform health assessments by observing patients and measuring vital signs such as pulse, heart rate, and blood pressure to guide care and support medical decision-making.
Now in its fourth year, the program is led by Carla Harmon, Director of the Pre-Licensure BSN Program at FranU, and continues to give students an authentic look at the nursing profession. For many participants, the experience reshaped and deepened their understanding of healthcare careers as their comments show:
"I came hoping to expand my knowledge of the medical field, and it has opened my mind a lot," said Kevin. "I thought I wanted to be an ER physician, but a nurse does a lot more. They do what matters, which is helping people."
Marley Grace left with a greater appreciation for both the profession and the responsibility it carries. "The program has taught me how important the medical field is and how to use proper techniques to protect you and others."
For Katelyn, one of the biggest lessons was the importance of empathy. "It has taught me to be open-minded because you never know what people are going through in their own lives. You can help people by listening and being an advocate for their health."
Known for its strong health sciences programs and commitment to service, FranU prepares students to lead with both knowledge and compassion. Through programs like Future Nurses, students gain valuable hands-on experience, explore healthcare career pathways, and discover how they can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
