QSM Awardee Highlight: Excite Imaginations

Charles G. Scarbrough teaches Mathematics at Broadmoor High School in the East Baton Rouge Parish School District. In addition to being certified in Louisiana to teach Mathematics, he is also a National Board Certified Teacher. Prior to beginning at Broadmoor in 2005, he taught at the state-chartered East Baton Rouge Arts & Technology School (EBRATS). Prior to that, he briefly taught at a parochial school in North Alabama. About half-way through his career here in EBR Parish Schools, he had the opportunity to teach Intro to Engineering through the Gordon A. Cain Center at LSU. That led to him teaching Intro to Robotics, Intro to Computational Thinking, and Survey of Drones. For the past four years he has been awarded QSM Grants which have benefited his students greatly. In turn, he has assisted other teachers in applying for QSM grants that helped them to provide instruction for their students.

He believes, "That type of higher level education is important." Broadmoor High School is a Title I school, meaning the majority of the students are economically disadvantaged. For Charles, an education means more than academic achievement–it means giving his students hope for a better life. Charles shares, "we never know what learning experience, large or small, may make a difference in a student’s life. I get all that I can for our students, so that we may give all that we can for their future." Toward that end, for years now, he has regularly applied for and received QSM Grants. This allows him to build more than a lesson–but a program that will serve his students for years to come. The robots and drones that were funded permit his students to construct, to fly, and to imagine; rather than just hearing a description or watching a video. They excite student’s imaginations, giving them a reason to enjoy school rather than to skip school.

He shared that the QSM application process is somewhat challenging–and it should be challenging. Public funds should not be disbursed casually, or for endeavors that are vaguely defined–no matter how well intended. QSM’s application process requires teachers to form a concrete vision of what they want to achieve, how to achieve it, and what students will do to learn. Fortunately, the site provides resources for guidance, and questions that direct teachers in forming their proposal. Because of its benefit to his educational programs, Charles will continue to apply for QSM grants. He will continue to form educational projects worthy of the awards and write and rewrite proposals until he clearly sees what the project will be like months down the road when it is implemented. He encourages his colleagues to apply, and gives them direction in applying. He is thankful for the opportunities the QSM program affords us
