The Capital Area STEM Network Center is excited to announce the return of the Spark Your Summer program, designed to empower and uplift single mothers, particularly those within the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) demographic. This initiative is a collaboration with the East Baton Rouge Parish Library’s STEM Team and East Baton Rouge Parish Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC). This year's program will be held at the Greenwell Springs Branch Library on July 20 and July 27, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, with lunch included. Participants will receive hands-on training in essential skills such as hand tools, automotive care, basic electricity, and HVAC systems. Each session includes lunch and engaging STEM activities for children.
Spark Your Summer aims to foster self-sufficiency by equipping single mothers with critical knowledge and practical skills. On July 20, attendees will learn the basics of using hand tools and gain hands-on experience in automotive maintenance, covering routine checks and simple repairs. On July 27, the focus will shift to understanding and managing basic electrical issues and maintaining heating and cooling systems at home. This comprehensive training builds technical skills and also boosts the confidence of participants to handle common household challenges independently.
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by single mothers, especially the lack of childcare, Spark Your Summer incorporates STEM activities for children. While mothers participate in training sessions, their kids will engage in age-appropriate STEM projects, ensuring a fun and educational experience for the entire family.
